When one imagines becoming a parent, fertility issues or medical treatment typically isn’t part of the picture you see in your mind.
The diagnosis of infertility can feel like the loss of a dream, especially if you are dealing with an egg quality issue such as Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) or Diminished Ovarian Reserve (DOR). Making the decision to use donor eggs is a personal one and some understandably struggle with the idea of not having a biological child.
While no one can make this decision for you, it’s important to ask yourself what your goal is. Do you want to be a parent? If so, you CAN still be an incredible, loving one without your child having your DNA. Sometimes, asking ourselves what the ultimate dream is, can put things into perspective.
This isn’t at all meant to diminish the process or pain of accepting that using donor eggs means your child will not have your genetics. They will however, have your heart. If you are ready to expand your family and are open to the idea of using donor eggs (which statistically will increase your chances of pregnancy), you could very well find yourself being the parent you always dreamed of.
In my years of experience, I have worked with so many who have gone through the process of using an egg donor who initially wondered if they’d feel an emotional connection to their child. I’ve had the honor of seeing these parents when they hold that baby in their arms and I can tell you time and time again, those worries melt away quickly.
Our theme for August is, “What’s Your Superpower?” For you, it may, in fact be, to a super parent. What does that mean? That means you love, nurture, raise, support and create memories with a child. Think of your own parents – when you look back on the affection they gave you; the vacations you took, the holidays you celebrated, you don’t think about their genetics. You think about their unconditional love.
If your super power is to be a parent who can provide a beautiful child your love and attention, then don’t you dare let the medical diagnosis of infertility stop you!
If you have questions about using donor eggs or you feel ready to start the process, please feel free to contact me so we can talk next steps. You don’t have to be alone in this and you don’t have to give up on your dreams either.
Together, we will find your superhero costume, dust it off and get to work on building your family!
